It was announced today that Denman has been retired after picking up an injury. I must be honest and say that Kauto Star is my favourite horse of all time, and I was gutted when Denman beat him in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup, but that’s nothing at all to do with Denman at all. Denman remains one of the greatest steeplechasers to have graced the racetrack. His Cheltenham runs were amazing, second only to his runs in the Hennessy, and I hope he enjoys his well-earned retirement. 

The BBC article that documented him showed two things:

  1. How good a racehorse he was;
  2. That since they couldn’t show a video of Denman, they’ve never broadcast him on live BBC television, which documents the sheer lack of horse racing that appears on BBC Sport nowadays.

Long live Denman; RIP BBC racing.
